Orthopedic implant applications include components for hips, knees, shoulders, ankles and trauma products. The need for a PVD coating is greatest on components made of titanium or Ti-6-4 alloy. These are the materials of choice for many components due to their biocompatibility, good mechanical properties, light weight and corrosion resistance.
However, titanium and titanium alloys have poor wear resistance and a high coefficient of friction resulting in high wear rates and galling when titanium alloy components are in contact with other metals, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), bone or abrasive third body particles. |
